The issue is that Nintendo Would have to make a separate device for that, which involves flash memory in Slot-1. It would also take a lot of time to prevent piracy, points system would be odd, and the DS network speeds are low.

Not necessarily. It could be like the NES games in Animal Crossing: once you have unlocked a game on the console (except FDS games or large games), you can download it to the handheld and play it there.

Of course, that would limit the size of the games, since both the game and the emulator would have to fit into RAM. No Donkey Kong Country if they do it that way.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo releases some sort of a flash memory device for the DS at some point. It could probably use a security method similar to the way they prevent Virtual Console games from being played on the wrong Wii.

DKC for Game Boy Color might fit, as though it's 4 MiB, it has a lot of empty space in it.

All I know is that SNES multiplayer via DS - DS would be a dream come true to me.

Imagine a download play setup, where if someone else has SNEmulDS on their DS you can link with them and send them a ROM if they dont have it, then play multiplayer right there.

For one thing, DS to DS wireless communication isn't fully cracked, and if you don't have access to a PC for Snes9x, ZSNES, or BSNES, then you're probably away from an access point too. For another, multiplayer would be dog slow with roms bigger than Street Fighter II Turbo (20 Mbit) unless someone can figure out how to make -compy.

Honestly, I've been hoping Nintendo would feature a Virtual Console Download Play option from the Wii to the DS for NES and some smaller (and less complex) SNES games. I think Sony has a similar thing going with downloading old PlayStation games from the PlayStation Store and playing them on the PS3 or saving them to a Memory Stick and playing them on PSP. It would just add some more incentive to buying those old games again if I could play them on the DS as well. The only hitch is that, besides losing the data when power is turned off, there is the possibility of the data being copied via WiFi and redistributed. We already have the DS Download Station demos out there. The last thing Nintendo would want to do is allow their VC games to be easily copied.

Can you think of a way for the DS and the Wii to communicate securely such that the data couldn't just be copied during transmission or that the MAC address couldn't be spoofed? The only method I can think of that might work is if Nintendo requires the MAC address of the DS (or some other unique number stored in the DS's firmware) to be registered with the Wii. This could be done in an automatic fashion from the Wii by way of a Download Play app or something of the sort (which would actually make it more secure than entering it in manually). Once the DS is "synchronized" with the Wii, then the Wii could append that number into the emulator and rom that it will send to the DS. So, the DS uses Download Play to get the game, and when it runs it, a check is made to the firmware for that number for verification. If it doesn't exist, it doesn't run. This would prevent a packet sniffer from just copying all the data and redistributing it because even if it did get on another DS, it would need to have the same unique number to play. This is also why it's important that the number shouldn't be specified manually. And I suppose there could be ways to defeat this by overwriting areas of the firmware or with emulators, but those require quite a bit more involved hacking as well. In the end, no method is perfect. Sadly, I don't think the Big N wants to adopt a method unless it is copy-proof, which just isn't possible.

Well, by that logic there wouldn't be a virtual console at all, unless everybody's Wii had a wired connection to the internet.

The data is still encrypted and somehow keyed to that particular Wii. Although I don't know if that information is added before or after its downloaded. I would think before.
