I just stumbled upon this page and can give some insight: Legacy was founded by members of the gba group Rising Sun and former gba/ds group Mode7, which broke down after the Kalisto busts in 2002(not sure, too lazy to check the year). They also had some ex-people from the gba group Venom and the gamecube group STARCUBE. The ds dumper was developed by a rather known hacker that also used to be part of STARCUBE at the time. He actually reversed the whole ds slot1 stuff from the ground and built the first dumper revision. You didn't need to know about/break the encryption because that was actually done by the DS (how nice of nintendo to spare hackers with that). The supposedly dumper picture only shows some cables and funky leds because (a) the guy responsible didn't want to show more, (b) it looked cool nonetheless and (c) was only done for fun and not to give any sort of proof. The fact that Legacy were later the first one to dump the new protection (aka updated cards that used different timing) and were also the first scene group to properly and completely dump a dsi game should show that they indeed had some major technical knowledge. So take that info or leave it be, i ain't gonna provide "proof" or anything for obvious reasons.
