JEnesisDS
From PHWiki
jEnesisDS is a Sega Genesis/MegaDrive emulator for the Nintendo DS, by Lordus. It is a port of a Genesis emulator written in Java and was released as an entry in the GBAX 2007 competition. It is the only Genesis emulator for the DS with sound support.
The GBAX release was version 0.4 (hardware renderer only), which was soon followed by v0.4a (both hardware and software renderers). v0.5 and beyond are hardware renderer only versions.
The current version is v0.7.4, released July 12, 2008.
The author is believed to have left the DS homebrew scene as he was contracted by SEGA to develop Sonic Classic Collection on DS. His real name (Stephen Dittrich) is credited in the staff roll as the lead developer and the game is using a modified version of JenesisDS with various bug fixes and some minor alterations to make them look and sound closer to the Genesis versions. As of now, it has been years since the last version and Lordus has not been seen on the internet since around the last release. JenesisDS is likely discontinued due to an agreement with Lordus and SEGA.

Features
- Hardware renderer that runs at full speed for most games, though with some graphical glitches; only vertical scaling available
- Software renderer (v0.4a only) that has excellent graphics and vertical/horizontal scaling support, though at the cost of speed (adjustable frameskip available)
- Relatively high compatibility for games 3 MB or less
- SRAM save/load support
- .smd, .bin, and .gen support
- Savestates (2 available). As of version 0.7, loading savestates tend to mess up the sound.
- Sound support
- Several options available to increase compatibility
- Follow D-pad (added in 0.7.4) scrolls the screen left and right as you press the d-pad in that direction. This was added for the lack of horizontal scaling in the hardware renderer.
- 6-button Pad support (added in version 0.7). This adds support for games that used 6 buttons. The option needs to be enabled BEFORE loading a game. Uses the X, L, and R buttons.
- Screen adjustment using X, L, and R buttons (enabling 6-button dpad mode disables this). L and R pans the view left and right. X resets the view back to the middle.
Notes
- Sound support is currently fairly basic, though it is expected to improve. Improving speed when playing with sound remains of a higher priority however. It is the author's belief that it will be possible to run all games at full speed with sound some day.
- If a game runs too slow, disable the Z80 by turning "Fake Z80" on. Of course, that will most likely turn off the sound as well (Except for games that have their sound driver on the main CPU, like Sonic, Gunstar Heroes and others).
- It's highly recommended that you read the "readme.txt" file included with the download. It offers more information that will be useful when using jEnesisDS.
- If a game does not boot, try tinkering with the various options available to you. Many times the games can indeed be booted.
- Games over 3MB in size will NOT load in the present versions of JEnesisDS. The author is working on fixing this limitation.
Compatibility List
These games have all been tested using JenesisDS version 0.7.4. The sound in this version is now nearly perfect (I'd say about 90%) and all games should sound perfect as well (unless specified otherwise). They are only games I (Granville) have tested. Feel free to edit in your own results or update the list for a newer version. All games are NTSC US versions unless specified otherwise. Important Notice: If a game doesn't seem to boot, always try turning H-INT ON. This often cures seemingly non-booting games. Sometimes, you also need to set the region detection manually as well.

| Sonic the Hedgehog 2 | Runs great! No slowdowns. Slight possible flickering in some water-filled areas. The special stage looks a little rough. Nearly flawless! Very fun! |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | Runs great! Similar minor problems to the other Sonic games. Almost perfect! |
| Sonic and Knuckles | Runs great! only noticeable glitches were in the Lava Reef boss and Sky Sanctuary. The Lava Reef boss fight against Robotnik doesn't display the lava flow properly. Instead of tilting the screen and making the lava flow angle properly, the lava sometimes obscures part of the screen. It makes it a little hard to see the fight, but it's not TOO bad. |
| Sonic Spinball | Nearly perfect! It's now full speed in the new version of JenesisDS. The only glitches I've encountered were some minor sprite/background priority problems. Sonic sometimes appears behind something he should be in front of. It's very minor and doesn't affect the game. |
